Key Highlights
well, this one was just a stinker. The Royals offense could not get anything going, and swinging at the first pitch was the biggest disease of the night. Quite honestly, a very putrid performance against an Orioles team that is really struggling to start the season. You can’t really get upset because the Royals have won nine of their last 10 ball games, but it still is a little concerning to see the offense continue to struggle as much as it is. To be as blunt as possible, the at bats were just not competitive tonight. And it was quite apparent for all two hours…?? of the game? That’s all it took in this one just because the Royals bats were just not ready. There was one half inning the entire game where anything happened. In the bottom of the seventh, the Orioles tacked on three against Michael Wacha and Steven Cruz. The big blow was the two run homer from former Royal, Ryan O’Hearn. And as Royal fans, that is just disgusting and bafflingly to watch. especially the way that he is swinging it. To the opposite field? Beating the shift? All things he could *not* do in Kansas City. So it’s incredibly frustrating for us everywhere.
After the homer by O’Hearn on an inside out swing (clearly I’m over it), the Orioles loaded the bases for another former Royal, Emmanuel Rivera, who singles in another run. Good for Royals I guess tonight. Just weird pretenses tonight all round. Unfortunately that’s the final score because the offense lied dormant the whole night and sacrificed Bobby Witt Jr.’s 22-game hit streak while they were at it. So Bob won’t catch DiMaggio this time, but hopefully someday.
Michael Wacha was actually fantastic in this one through six. Confusing Orioles hitters easier than stealing candy from Coco Crisp. My lone take away was Wacha was everything we expect him to be, but he did struggle third time through and late into his start again. More importantly, we need to win the starts that Wacha pitches like this. Just need to, I know that’s so easy to say behind a computer screen, but it’s true. The Royals offense needs a fire starter man, and I think they’re gonna have to pay a pretty penny for that at the deadline. Bob is one of, if not the best player in baseball, don’t let him become Mike Trout. Be better than that please. But also important that this could be a blip in a bigger picture here in a few games. If you can just move on. Just wipe it away like the loss on Sunday, and we should be back to winning some ballgames.
Summary of the Next Game:
The Royals will try to get back in the win column on Saturday night at Camden Yards. Thankfully they’ll have their best pitcher so far this year on the mound. Although he was a little knocked around in his last start, Kris Bubic has been exceptional for the Royals in 2025. A 2.25 ERA, and that is truly because his last start he gave up four earned. Before that he had an ERA in the 1s, and had everything clicking. They’re gonna need him to jump back on the horse to get the boys back over the edge. Tomoyuki Sugano, the veteran Japanese right hander takes the hill for the O’s. He has been solid in his first few starts in the states, keeping an even 3.00 ERA and going five scoreless his last outing against the Yankees. The ballpark in Baltimore at Camden Yards is the beautiful setting for a Saturday evening of a great matchup. 6:15p KC time in this one, as the boys will try to shake off the rust this time.
