The Royals have learned where they’ll draft in 2024

The MLB Draft lottery took place Tuesday afternoon. The Royals, who had an 18.3% chance of earning the first overall pick will be selecting sixth next July. Division rivals — the Guardians and White Sox — will both be picking ahead of Kansas City. The entire top ten is below:

  1. Cleveland Guardians
  2. Cincinnati Reds
  3. Colorado Rockies
  4. Oakland Athletics
  5. Chicago White Sox
  6. Kansas City Royals
  7. St. Louis Cardinals
  8. Los Angeles Angels
  9. Pittsburgh Pirates
  10. Washington Nationals

A comprehensive list of the top 2024 Draft Prospects is available here from Future Stars Series. With the sixth selection, the chance that the Royals are able to draft one of the draft’s very best prospects has dwindled some. At the top — currently, plenty can change between now and then — sit infielders JJ Wetherholt, Travis Bazzana, and Nick Kurtz.

Future Stars Series ranks RHP Chase Burns (Wake Forest) as their sixth-best prospect next summer. Other prospects in the mix when the Royals are on the clock figure to be outfielder Vance Honeycutt (North Carolina), RHP Brody Brecht (Iowa), LHP Hagen Smith (Arkansas), and outfielder Konnor Griffin (Jackson Prep, MS).

There’s a ton that can change between now and next summer, especially among the NCAA landscape. At least now, the Royals know where they’ll be picking.
