Final Score NYY 3 | KCR 4
Overall Record 40-30 (2nd Place, 5 GB)
Winning/Losing Pitcher
- W: James McArthur (3-3, 5.08 ERA)
- L: Clay Holmes (1-2, 1.80 ERA)
Royals Player of the Game
Alec Marsh: 7 IP, H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K
Marsh put on an absolute clinic against the New York Yankees, especially Aaron Judge, whom he struck out three times. Marsh’s start was quite impressive, as he wasn’t afraid to come at hitters and pound the zone. The only real trouble Marsh ran into was a single he gave up to Juan Soto in the 7th, but he followed that by striking out Judge and Alex Verdugo and then getting Gleybar Torres to pop out. It was a much-needed start by Marsh for the Royals, who lost the first three games to the Yankees.
Key Highlights
The Royals kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the 4th inning when Vinnie Pasquantino drove in Maikel Garica and Bobby Witt, Jr. with an RBI double. Outside of that, the Royals bats were held very silent. Nestor Cortes, Jr. did his typical thing where he was generating tons of weak contact. There were a lot of pop-ups and ground balls for the Royals.
Unfortunately, the two runs weren’t enough for the Royals to maintain the lead as the Yankees kicked off the scoring off of John Schreiber in the 8th. Anthony Rizzo led it off with a solo home run, and Schreiber kind of unraveled after that. Back-to-back singles by Austin Wells and Trent Grisham put two on with one out. Volpe then grounded out, and Angel Zerpa came in to replace Schreiber. Zerpa gave up a single to Juan Soto, who drove in both base runners.
The Royals offense couldn’t get anything off of Luke Weaver in the eighth. They started to rally in the ninth thanks to an infield single by Drew Waters and a single by Kyle Isbel, which gave them first and third with two outs. Maikel Garcia came up with the game on the line, and you best believe he came through! He scorched a ball down the line for an RBI double that drove in both Waters and Isbel. Great momentum going into the next series!
Summary of the Next Game
The Royals will look to continue this momentum as they head to Los Angeles for a three-game series against the Dodgers. It will be another tough matchup. LHP Cole Ragans (4-4, 3.08 ERA) will take the mound against RHP Gavin Stone (7-2, 2.93 ERA).
