The Bullpen

4 IP, 3 H, 3 K, 1 R

After Alec Marsh gave up three runs in the first it seemed that the game was heading towards the bullpen being used a lot. Marsh would go five innings giving up five, but the bullpen came in and gave the Royals a shot. They opened with a scoreless frame from Sam Long then transitioned to an Angel Zerpa scoreless frame. James McArthur would come in and get into trouble, but Freddy Fermin’s error allowed an unearned run to score. Finally, Kris Bubic would come in with a scoreless frame to continue his stretch of no runs given up.

Key Highlights

For the most part, the offense was a no-show against a guy with a 6+ ERA coming into the game. The 1-through-4 hitters all got a hit and both RBIs, however, the rest of the order had three hits and two walks on the day. Two of those three hits were from Freddy Fermin and the two walks were from Hunter Renfroe. The offense never waked up today and that didn’t help with the Marsh start.

Speaking of Alec Marsh’s start, it wasn’t great. He seems to have starts where he looks great and terrible at the same time. He finished with five innings pitched giving up five earned runs, six strikeouts, and two walks. After giving up three runs in the first, he settled in for the next three innings and looked to get through five without any drama. That didn’t happen as he gave up a leadoff double to Geraldo Perdomo and then a subsequent homer to Ketel Marte. At times, Marsh looks good and others looks bad that is the duality of a fifth starter.

Summary of the Next Game

Going for the series win, the Royals will send out Michael Wacha (7-6, 3.55 ERA) who has been great in the past month. The DBacks will send Ryne Nelson (7-6, 4.78 ERA) to face the Royals. With a one game lead in the wildcard standings getting games like this would be beneficial for the Royals.
