The Royals have signed infielder Cavan Biggio to a minor-league contract. The team announced the move on Sunday. Biggio, 29 years old, has spent most of his professional career in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. A fifth-round pick in 2016, Biggio debuted with the Blue Jays as a 24-year-old in 2019. His debut season was fantastic, slashing .234/.364/.429 with a .195 ISO and 115 wRC+. He followed up by showing a 122 wRC+ in the shortened 2020 season. From there, Biggio regressed to more of a part-time, utility player.
In all, Biggio slashed .227/.343/.382 in 490 games for the Blue Jays. In 2024, Biggio found his way elsewhere. Toronto designated him for assignment on June 7. He was claimed by the Dodgers and ultimately traded from Toronto to Los Angeles in exchange for RHP Bradyon Fisher. The Dodgers released Biggio, who was then signed by San Francisco in August and traded to the Braves in September. In all, Biggio appeared in four organizations in 2024 all in just three months.
His slash line tells the story. In 78 MLB games in 2024, Biggio slashed just .192/.300/.321. His 32.7% strikeout rate was the worst of his MLB career thus far, paired with a career-worst .106 ISO. Now on a minor league contract with Kansas City, Biggio will get a chance to right the ship and rekindle some of his past glory. He’ll fill a similar utility role in the system. He offers experience at every position except catcher. Although he didn’t qualify, Baseball Savant graded Biggio in the above-90th percentile range for chase rate last season. His walk rate was well above-average as well, but most other metrics such as hard-hit rate and strikeout rate were among the worst in the league.
In Kansas City, Biggio looks for a new start. For the Royals, it’s yet another low-impact signing with a great cost-to-potential ratio. Biggo, much like Jordan Groshans — signed by the Royals earlier this offseason — is a former top prospect with proven MLB experience but more struggles than anything of late.
