Royals sign long-time Tiger, Castro, to MiLB contract

The Royals have continued their offseason cross-country jog to Spring Training. On Saturday, they signed Harold Castro, their fourth minor league contract of the offseason. Castro, 31, spent his first five seasons with the Detroit Tigers. He spent 2023 with the Rockies before heading to Mexico where he would spend the 2024 season.

Castro spent the entirety of his MLB career playing as a utility man. The most action he saw in any single season was 2022. That season, Castro appeared in 120 games for the Tigers and slashed .271/.300/.381. He’s played every position on the diamond except catcher. He even pitched a small amount (8.2 innings) even if they were in a mop-up position player type of role.

For the Royals, it adds another solid depth piece that could impact the club with a strong spring. The team has invited him to spring training where he will join fellow non-roster invites including Junior Fernandez, Jordan Groshans, and Cavan Biggio. His largest quality trait at the plate is contact. With a career 86.9% zone contact rate, Castro is a safe bet to put the ball in play. It doesn’t come with much power at all, and a career 3.6% walk rate isn’t going to offer any real on-base additives either.
