Royals To Showcase Talent: Spring Breakout returns in 2025

Last year was the inaugural Spring Breakout game, a showcase for Major League Baseball’s top young prospects. It was a great opportunity for eight of the Royals’ Top 10 prospects to appear on a larger stage. The Royals’ roster in 2024 included catchers Blake Mitchell, Carter Jensen, and Ramon Ramirez. Ben Kudrna and Frank Mozzicato were the pitchers who headlined last year’s roster which included other notable prospects, including Will Klein, Steven Zobac, Tyler Gentry, Blake Wolters, Carson Roccaforte, Trevor Werner, Hunter Owen, and Hiro Wyatt. Teams sent between 23 and 27 players to participate in the showcase.

The showcase is set to return for a second season in 2025. This year’s Spring Breakout game features the Royals minor leaguers facing off against the Diamondbacks’ system on March 14. To be eligible for the list, a player must have rookie eligibility. Rookie eligibility is defined by less than 130 MLB at-bats, fewer than 40 MLB innings pitched, and no more than 45 days on an active MLB roster.

The games will again give the Royals’ prospects a chance to showcase themselves on a larger stage amid Spring Training. Many of last year’s talent is likely to return, but there should be newcomers on the roster as well. If last year’s group is any indication, a handful of 2024 draftees will likely participate. David Shields (2024 2nd), Drew Beam (2024 3rd), and L.P. Langevin (2024 4th) have yet to make their professional debuts. The Spring Breakout will allow them to do so. Top 100 prospects Jac Caglianone and Blake Mitchell will almost certainly be front and center, as well as the fellow top catching prospect Carter Jensen.

Full rosters for last year’s Spring Breakout released much closer to the date of the contest, meaning it will likely be close to two months until we know which prospects will headline the roster for the Royals.
