April was a good start to the season for the Storm Chasers. They held a 12-9 record and performed above average offensively and out of the bullpen. There were quite a few standout performers and things to be excited about moving forward. This is the time of year when we start to see some of these top performers get the call-up to Kansas City, so we will appreciate them while we have them. Without further ado, here are April’s hitter and pitcher of the month.
Hitter of the month
Logan Porter
April stats: 12 G, .375/.500/.825, 1.325 OPS
4 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 9 BB, 9 K, 1 SB
It was an absolutely ridiculous month for Porter. He probably couldn’t have dreamed up a better start to the season. The most eye-popping number is his 1.325 OPS. That is obviously unsustainable, but it is impressive to be able to maintain that high of a number over a 12-game stretch. Porter has already proven to be the Royals’ third catching option based on his taxi squad assignment a couple of weeks ago. He appears to be ready for his opportunity should he need to fill in for Salvador Pérez or Freddy Fermín at some point.
Pitcher of the month
Walter Pennington
April stats: 15.0 IP, 1.80 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, 19 K, 2 BB, .151 OBA
It was a stellar month for the 26-year-old lefty reliever. He built off a great spring training and seems to show no signs of slowing down. Despite a tough 2022 season, he has been consistent throughout his career, boasting a 3.74 ERA in 3-plus minor league seasons. His opportunity to prove himself in Kansas City should be occurring this season, but if not, what are we doing here?
