As the offseason chugs on, the Kansas City Royals have learned which members of the organization are now finalists for key season awards. Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. already brought home a Gold Glove at Shortstop. It marks the first Gold Glove of his career. Witt and Salvador Perez are both finalists for Silver Slugger Awards at their positions as well. Announced Monday, you can add three more members of the Royals to the list of Awards finalists this season.
Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was named one of three finalists for the American League MVP Award. He joins Aaron Judge and Juan Soto as finalists for the award. By landing as a finalist, the Royals will earn an extra PPI (Prospect Promotion Incentive) draft selection after the first round in the 2025 Rule 4 Draft. Witt becomes the first Royal to place in the top three of MVP voting since outfielder Lorenzo Cain who did so in 2015. Catcher Salvador Perez was the most recent MVP candidate, placing seventh in MVP voting back in 2021.
Other Awards finalists for 2024 include Seth Lugo and Manager Matt Quatraro. Lugo was named a finalist for the American League Cy Young Award. Lugo stands alongside Tigers’ starter Tarik Skubal and Guardians’ reliever Emmanuel Clase. Reliever Wade Davis was the last Royal to place in Cy Young voting, finishing sixth in 2015. Starter Zack Greinke was of course the most recent Kansas City pitcher to claim the award in his stellar 2009 season.
The AL Central looms large in AL Manager of the Year voting. Alongside Quatraro as finalists are Guardians Manager Steven Vogt and Tigers Manager A.J. Hinch. Ned Yost placed sixth in Manager of the Year voting back in 2015 after finishing third in 2014 and seventh in 2013. The only Manager to claim the award in franchise history was Tony Peña following the 2003 season.
Award winners will be announced across multiple days next week on MLB Network.
